The FAA aviation medical is not intended to be a comprehensive physical checkup. It is intended to be a screening exam to determine if a pilot meets FAA regulatory standards. This is not necessarily the same as common medical standards of care. For this reason you should continue to see your family physician for routine periodic checkups and management of your health. Depending upon your health status, coordination between your AME and healthcare provider is occasionally needed to provide the FAA with additional information they may require for medical certification. If this requires services by your primary care provider or other medical consultants, it may be covered by your health insurance.
Due to the screening nature of the FAA Medical Certification examination, most health insurers do not cover FAA medical certification examinations. If you wish to seek reimbursement from your health insurer independently we will provide you with an invoice that describes the exam and procedures (ECG for some First Class Medical Certificates) with appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
